Gutenprint supports over 1400 printers and is based on the GPL license. When Gutenprint is ported and Ghostscript tweated it will be possible to print directly from the Amiga to over 1400 different printers!
|Priority:||High As prioritized by the OS4 development team|
|Description:||There has been much discussion about getting proper printing support on the Amiga. Gutenprint holds the key to achiving this. The Gutenprint project is designed to by highly portable and has no external dependancys. In my personal testing I have been able to compile the test tools and printer specific object files but the lack of "ijs-config" in the current available Ghostscript ports prevents the building of the ijs version of the Gutenprint binary.
IJS is a standard means of data communcation between Ghostscript and the Gutenprint drivers so any data, PS or PDF, passed to Ghostscript can use the Gutenprint processors to create output for specific printer models. If implemented the initial printing flow would be:
Standard Amiga printer to post script -> PS file to Ghostscript -> Ghostscript to Gutenprint -> Gutenprint output to the printer.
Once the initial flow is tested and working it would not be difficult to wrap the functions in to a special driver or scrip to automate the process.
To complete this work both Gutenprint and Ghostscirpt will need to be modifed. A similar project for the OS Haiku took 6 months and rasied 2000.
